Some approach the study of magic and the unknown from official academic channels. Others leverage their innate understanding through their heritage or their sorcerous bloodline. You approach it an even different way: studying the esoteric and the forbidden. Perhaps you are even part of some sort of secret society yourself. But, unlike a cultist, you do not seek to serve or venerate these powers. You study them to combat them—or control them.
Is it disrupting a cult’s activities with some of their own power that’s drawn you out on adventure? Have you or someone you know come into posession of a cursed object and you’re seeking a way to break the curse? Or are you seeking a terrible, esoteric tome to add its contents to your repertoire?

Feature: Occult Lingo. Because you have studied forbidden arts so thoroughly, you expertly use jargon and knowledge in a way that makes others believe that you are involved in these illicit activities. You may always choose to use Arcana in place of Deception when you are trying to negotiate with or infiltrate cults or other, similar esoteric societies.
Adventures and Advancement. Once the people learn of your knowledge with dark and dangerous energies, they may approach you with rumors of cult activity or other sources of dark magic in the region. If you successfully stall or dispel a major cult or ritual, you may obtain the services of one seasoned sage.
